Dr. Georges E. Vougioukalakis is a volcanologist who is working in the Department of Energy Resources of the Institute of Geology and Mineral Exploration, Greece (IGME). In the last 18 years, He has carried out research on volcanic activity and volcanic hazards assessment in the Hellenic volcanic arc for the last twenty years, focusing mainly on the South Aegean volcanic islands of Thera (Santorini), Nisyros, Milos and Kos, and on volcano monitoring of the active volcanoes of Thera (Santorini) and Nisyros. He has coordinated the IGME research group in the EU DG-12 Environment project “Santorini Volcano Laboratory”. He is the General Secretary of the “Institute for the Study and Monitoring of the Santorini Volcano” the organization that is responsible for the Santorini Volcano Observatory and the local monitoring network. He is coordinating the IGME research project “Study of the Hellenic Cenozoic Volcanism”.
