Dwight Coleman
Marine Research Scientist, University of Rhode Island
Dwight F. Coleman is a marine geologist and director of research for the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration in Mystic, CT. He is responsible for leading oceanographic expeditions to survey underwater archaeological sites. He has participated in or led more than a dozen oceanographic research cruises, including several with Dr. Robert Ballard and the team from the Institute for Exploration.
Dr. Coleman has searched for historical shipwrecks in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and has participated in multiple expeditions to the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean to search for well-preserved ships of antiquity as well as to map the undersea geology. He was previously a research geologist at the United States Geological Survey in Woods Hole, MA and a support scientist at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI. His educational background includes a BS degree in Geology from the University of New Hampshire and MS and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO).
